Sarasota, FL

About Sarasota

Sarasota first became a "modern" town in the 1880s, when the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company promoted it in Scotland. Scottish families sailed over expecting fertile land and citrus groves — and found a frontier camp; most left. Among the hardy few who stayed was John Hamilton Gillespie, a Scottish aristocrat and lawyer who built the upscale DeSoto Hotel, developed the town's infrastructure, and is credited with building America's first golf course right here in Sarasota. He became the town's first mayor when Sarasota incorporated as a town on October 14, 1902; it became a city on May 13, 1913.

Two powerhouse figures put Sarasota on the map in the 1910s. Chicago socialite Bertha Honore Palmer arrived in 1910, bought tens of thousands of acres, and made Sarasota a winter retreat for wealthy northerners — her waterfront estate at what is now Historic Spanish Point and her 30,000-acre Meadowsweet Pastures ranch at today's Myakka River State Park are still the stuff of local legend. Then circus magnate John Ringling and his wife Mable made Sarasota their winter home in 1912, built the Venetian-style mansion Cà d'Zan in 1926, and in 1927 established the Ringling Bros. Circus winter headquarters here. Ringling's 1931 art museum turned Sarasota into "Florida's Cultural Coast."

That circus heritage is Sarasota's defining claim to fame — it bills itself as the Circus Capital of the World, with the Ringling Museum (art museum, mansion, and circus museum all in one) as the crown jewel. Add Siesta Key's powdery beaches, long rated among the best in the nation, and a performing-arts scene anchored by institutions like the Asolo Repertory Theatre, and you get a town whose outsized cultural reputation has always been part of the point.

Relocation Guide

Sarasota sits on Florida's Gulf Coast about an hour south of Tampa, with I-75 and US-41 as its main arteries. The city wraps around Sarasota Bay, with barrier islands (Siesta Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key) a short causeway hop away.

Population: ~57,800 (2024 U.S. Census estimate) · Schools: Sarasota County Schools

Who moves here: culture lovers (the Ringling, opera, ballet), retirees, remote workers, and beach people who want more than just beach. It's a real city with a real food scene, not just a resort town.

Housing: bayfront condos, historic Burns Court bungalows, luxury island estates, and more affordable options inland. Median listing price sits near $560,000 — the premium reflects the address.

If Sarasota's on your list, let's talk through which side of the trail fits your budget — FL 941-322-4444.
