Bradenton, FL

About Bradenton, FL

  • Bradenton takes its name from Joseph Braden, who came to the Manatee River area in the 1840s and built a roughly 1,100-acre sugar plantation with his brother Hector. In the 1870s the area around the old plantation began filling with new residents, and land investor Major William Turner petitioned for a post office — a clerical error on the 1878 application spelled the town "Braidentown" instead of "Bradentown." The town was laid out by William I. Turner, incorporated in 1903 by a 59-to-34 vote, and in 1924 the Florida Legislature finally dropped the "w," making it Bradenton — officially "The Friendly City."
  • The railroad changed everything: service crossed the Manatee River from Palmetto in 1902, turning a river trading town into a real commercial center with citrus and vegetable shipping, a courthouse, streetcars, and the Manavista Hotel opening in 1907. Like much of Florida, Bradenton rode the 1920s land boom, then weathered the Depression — the Memorial Pier, U.S. Post Office, and City Hall from that era still stand downtown.
  • Claims to fame? Tropicana Products was born here, as was the Bealls department store chain, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have trained here for generations — today at LECOM Park. Just north of town sits the De Soto National Memorial, marking the 1539 landing of the Hernando de Soto expedition. Downtown's Riverwalk, the Village of the Arts, and the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature give the old riverfront a second life locals genuinely enjoy.

Relocation Guide

Sarasota's easygoing neighbor to the north, Bradenton sits on the Manatee River in Manatee County — about 15 minutes from the beaches of Anna Maria Island and 20 from downtown Sarasota. I-75 and US-41 run right through it, so commuting up to Tampa (about an hour) or down the coast is straightforward.

Population: ~58,200 (2024 U.S. Census estimate) · Schools: School District of Manatee County

Who moves here: families priced out of Sarasota, first-time buyers, and retirees who want the Gulf Coast lifestyle at a friendlier number. The Riverwalk, Village of the Arts, and a genuinely revitalized downtown give it character beyond the subdivisions.

Housing: historic homes near downtown, waterfront condos along the river, and family subdivisions inland. Median listing price is around $400,000 — and buyers have had more breathing room here than in markets just south.
