Palmetto, FL

About Palmetto

Relocation Guide

Relocation Guide

Palmetto dates to the 1868 arrival of Samuel Sparks Lamb, who traveled down from Mississippi with his wife Sarah, seven children, a mule, a horse, and a wagon of household goods, and bought a homestead near Gamble Creek. He surveyed and platted a village, naming it after his birth state, South Carolina — the "Palmetto State." He's remembered as the "Father of Palmetto": he donated land for a cemetery, three churches, a public library, the Woman's Club, and a park (Lamb Park was his 1909 Christmas gift to the town). Incorporated as a village in 1893, Palmetto became a city by charter in 1897 — actually older than its better-known sister city across the Manatee River, Bradenton.

When the railroad arrived in 1902, the town's center shifted from the waterfront to the depot on 10th Street, and Palmetto rebuilt in brick instead of wood — much of that brick streetscape survives. A post office had already made Palmetto a fruit-and-vegetable shipping center, and the town kept that agricultural identity well into the 20th century.

Local points of pride: the 1914 Carnegie Library, one of the first in South Florida, built with a $10,000 matching grant from Andrew Carnegie himself — it's now part of the Palmetto Historical Park and houses the Alice V. Myers Archive Center. And Main Street is no sleepy relic: Florida named Palmetto Downtown Main Street its Florida Main Street Program of the Month in January 2025 for its downtown revitalization work.

Relocation Guide

Just across the Manatee River from Bradenton, Palmetto is a small historic river town in northern Manatee County — 10 minutes from I-75, 20 from Anna Maria Island's beaches, and an easy drive to both Bradenton and Sarasota.

Population: ~13,700 (2024 U.S. Census estimate) · Schools: School District of Manatee County

Who moves here: boaters (the Manatee River is your backyard), budget-conscious buyers who work in Bradenton or Sarasota, and folks who like small-town genuine over polished. It's one of the area's best-kept secrets for value.

Housing: charming older Florida homes, new construction, and riverfront properties. Median listing price is near $412,000 — proximity to everything at a friendlier number than the islands.
