North Port is a young city with an old landscape. In 1954, the Mackle Brothers' General Development Corporation bought 100,000 acres of scrub, pine, and ranch land and carved it into thousands of home sites, advertising them to shivering Northerners for "$10 down and $10 a month for 10 years." The city incorporated in 1959 — then called North Port Charlotte — with just 21 residents, all GDC employees lured by a year's free rent. The name was shortened to North Port in 1974.

Growth was slow at first: a decade after founding, only about 2,500 people lived there, scattered across a vast platted grid of empty streets and quiet waterways. But the land kept its promise. Today North Port is the largest municipality in Sarasota County and one of Florida's largest cities by land area — about 104 square miles — with a young, fast-growing population drawn by affordable housing, new schools, and quick access to I-75, Gulf beaches, and Myakka River State Park.

North Port's signature landmark is Warm Mineral Springs, a 240-foot-wide geothermal sinkhole holding steady at 85 degrees year-round. It's Florida's only warm spring, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and a window into roughly 10,000 to 11,000 years of history — its oxygen-free waters preserved human remains, bone and shell tools, and animal bones. Developed as a spa after World War II, it hosted part of Florida's Quadricentennial celebration from December 1959 to March 1960. The city took full ownership of the springs and surrounding parkland in 2014.
