D'Iberville, MS

About D'Iberville, MS

D'Iberville is named for Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d'Iberville, the French-Canadian explorer and soldier who sailed into Biloxi Bay in 1699 and claimed the region for King Louis XIV of France, founding what became the first French colony in the lower Mississippi Valley. His brother explored the area of the Back Bay and the Tchoutacabouffa River, which d'Iberville described as "very beautiful with pine woods." The area sat under French, then British, then Spanish control before Mississippi joined the Union in 1817.

What's unusual about D'Iberville is how long it stayed unincorporated — and how many names it carried. Through the 1800s the area's post offices went by Harvey, Quaves, Lazarus, and Seymour, and locals called it Seymour or North Biloxi well into the 20th century. When the school district adopted the name D'Iberville in the 1920s, the name finally stuck for good. A pedestrian bridge to Biloxi opened in 1901, a vehicular bridge in 1927, and the two communities grew closer — so close that when Biloxi expanded in the late 1970s, D'Iberville fought annexation and incorporated as its own city in 1988.

Since incorporation, D'Iberville has been one of the fastest-growing cities on the Gulf Coast. The old seafood-processing waterfront has given way to retail: the Promenade shopping center turned the city's northern edge into one of the state's busiest shopping districts, and the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort opened in 2015 as the first casino on the north side of the bay. Just across Back Bay from Biloxi and Keesler Air Force Base, D'Iberville has kept a distinct, small-city identity — a French-named city that was really a collection of farm and fishing families for most of its three hundred years, then reinvented itself almost overnight.
