Punta Gorda, FL

About Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda is one of Florida's older settlements, and it's had three different names along the way. Pioneers first settled the area in the mid-1870s, and it was soon known as Trabue — named by Colonel Isaac Trabue, who bought 30 acres, talked the railroad into extending across the Peace River, and named the town after himself. The other residents weren't fond of that, and after about a decade they adopted a Spanish name instead: Punta Gorda, meaning "fat point," for the broad point of land at the Peace River's meeting with Charlotte Harbor. It was incorporated as Punta Gorda in 1887 (formally in 1900), became the Charlotte County seat, and grew as a port town — in the 1890s it was shipping cattle to Cuba, and phosphate from the Peace River banks went out to the world.

The defining modern event was Hurricane Charley, which took a last-minute turn on August 13, 2004, and put Punta Gorda directly in its crosshairs. The Category 4 storm leveled the town's old mall, destroyed thousands of homes, and wrecked the historic downtown — including the 1921 Charlotte High School, whose back wall blew off. But the destruction became a fresh start. The city rebuilt on the same grid with strict modern building codes, restoring surviving 1880s Victorian homes alongside new hurricane-hardened construction. The school's rebuilt yellow-brick facade is now a local symbol of the comeback.

Before Charley, Punta Gorda was known as a sleepy village with small-town charm and old brick streets. What survives — and draws people now — is the compact, walkable downtown with its historic residential district, the waterfront Laishley Park Marina, the Harborwalk along the Peace River, Gilchrist Park on the harbor, and Fishermen's Village, the harbor-side shopping and dining complex.

Relocation Guide

Punta Gorda sits on Charlotte Harbor at the south end of the Peace River — about 25 minutes from Port Charlotte, 40 from Fort Myers, with I-75 and US-41 access and its own small airport (PGD, Allegiant hub). The brick-lined downtown is genuinely walkable.

Population: ~20,400 (2024 U.S. Census estimate) · Schools: Charlotte County Public Schools

Who moves here: retirees and pre-retirees who want a polished small city with a boating soul, plus remote workers. It rebuilt beautifully after Hurricane Charley and has a calendar full of festivals to prove it.

Housing: historic homes downtown, harbor-view condos, and deed-restricted communities like Burnt Store Isles. Median listing price is around $370,000, and the harbor lifestyle keeps demand steady.
