Parrish, FL

About Parrish

Relocation Guide

Relocation Guide

Parrish started life as Oak Hill. The earliest documented settlers, William B. Hooker and William H. Johnson, tried to grow sea island cotton there in 1850 — unsuccessfully. Major William Turner later homesteaded at Oak Hill, and in 1868–69 Crawford Parrish bought much of the Turner land. Parrish, a rancher and orange grower originally from Georgia, farmed food crops, tobacco, citrus, cattle, and hogs; in 1885 he was awarded a 40-acre land grant signed by President Grover Cleveland. When the post office came in 1879 and railroad service in 1902, the town needed a name of its own — "Oak Hill" was already taken by another stop on the line, so the town took the Parrish name, in honor of Crawford.

By the 1920s Parrish had a thriving little downtown along what's now US 301 — packing houses, grocery stores, doctors, a drugstore, a pool hall, and a barber shop. The Great Depression wiped most of that commerce out, and farmers left for the cities; Parrish stayed a small agricultural community until the late 2000s, when the farmland began turning into subdivisions.

Two things set Parrish apart. First, the Florida Railroad Museum is headquartered here, running weekend passenger rides from Parrish to Willow. Second, a delicious piece of history: in 1865, Judah P. Benjamin — the Confederate Secretary of State — fleeing Richmond, was hidden for several days in a swamp behind Major Turner's house before being moved on toward the Gamble Mansion. Dozens of Crawford Parrish's descendants still live in the area and stay active in local civic life.

Relocation Guide

Parrish sits in northern Manatee County along US-301, about 20 minutes from the water and 30 from downtown Sarasota — and it's where North River Ranch and big master-planned growth are reshaping the map. I-75 access at Moccasin Wallow keeps Tampa commutable at roughly 45 minutes.

Population: ~27,200 (2020 Census) · Schools: School District of Manatee County

Who moves here: young families chasing top-rated schools and brand-new homes, and anyone who wants modern construction without the coastal premium. It's growing fast but hasn't lost its small-town feel.

Housing: this is new-construction country — modern single-family homes dominate, with resale mixed in. Median listing price runs around $425,000, and well-priced homes move quickly.

If new construction is your thing, Parrish deserves a look — FL 941-322-4444.
